For twenty years I officiated high school, AAU and park district basketball games, retiring recently. For a few officiating is the focus of their occupation, while for most working as an umpire or basketball referee is an avocation. I started ref'ing to earn beer money during college, but it became a great way to stay connected to the best sports game in the universe. As a spinoff, I wrote a sports-thriller novel loosely based on my referee experiences titled, Advantage Disadvantage
No, not me. But a fellow referee told me once the visitors thought he was a homer, and people threw pennies on the floor at him.

I only had to do a couple write ups and I don't have them anymore. However, here is my advice.1) stick to facts not impressions. For example don't say I felt unsafe, instead write he threatened me if it was true. 2) include prior events that led to the final result, 3) remember that the reader was not there and will evaluate your write up with an independent, unbiased point of view.

The defender has to achieve the space before the offensive player alights or begins to step into that space. In other words the defender has to get there first, before the dribbler leaves his feet or steps towards that space.

In NFHS rules a referee should stop the game immediately for an injured player in imminent danger or the loss of contacts or glasses. Otherwise, the offense is allowed to complete their play, and then the ref can stop the game.

You have the right to your vertical space. If the defender steps in your space AND makes contact, it is a foul. Generally no contact no foul.

An important concept much misunderstood is that a defender is allowed to be moving as long as he is entitled to the space where contact is made. So, it is not a question of dipping a shoulder or even who initiates contact - it matters most which player is entitled to that spot.
