I spent just short of five years as a toll collector on the western end of New York State. Ask me anything, but please don't pay me in pennies.

I put one dollar bill in a exact change toll thing, thats apparently for coins only. There was no gate so i could keep driving. I am new in this country. Will i get a ticket for not paying?
Thank u in advance,

Gabriella, unfortunately I can't give you a better answer than maybe, maybe not. I've never had experience working in a system that employed exact change lanes so I can't speak to what happens when things go awry. If you do get some sort of ticket, I'd find a way to protest it since you sincerely tried to pay the toll, but hopefully you won't hear anything at all. Good luck!

Has anyone ever given you concert tickets, alcohol or other random things to pass through instead of the American dollar?

Asked by Bill W. over 11 years ago

Never been offered anything like that. If it were to happen, it's a bit tricky. Collectors on the road that I worked on are audited every shift by both axle count and money totals. Additionally, patrons have a ticket that must be surrendered upon their exit. If you accept something in lieu of money, the axle count will be off, and the processed ticket will add to your money total for the night. If you were to accept something from a driver, you would still somehow need to account for the axles coming through your lane and the money dictated by the exit ticket. So if a driver gave me something instead of his $1.50 toll, I'd still need to account for that money.

Are 100 dollar bills accepted

The NYS Thruway does accept them, though collectors are required to note the license plate number of the car associated with the bill in the event it comes back counterfeit.

What happens if the arm of the toll both for the "k-tag" (Kansas) goes up but then smashes into the car it just went up for? Who's falt is it? What happens if that car doesn't stop to make a report?

Asked by Curious over 10 years ago

Did this happen to you? Generally a good idea to stop and make a report when things like this happen. I didn't work in Kansas so I don't have any familiarity with the idiosyncrasies of their system. Without seeing the incident, it's impossible to assign fault. If the gate came down while a car is passing through then MAYBE that would suggest a malfunction but again I can't really say.

Where do you use the restroom, how do you use it during busy hours

Asked by Kossiwa over 9 years ago

Restrooms are located in the small buildings off to the side of the plazas. During day shifts you generally don't go too many hours without a break so it isn't a huge issue. If you've got other lanes open next to you and it isn't busy you sometimes can put out a cone in your lane and run in quickly. If traffic doesn't allow that you can intercom to try and get someone on break to give you a spell. If you're covering a small station by yourself overnight, you do the best you can...

I remember one day, this little kid looked at me and asked, "Do you live in there" ? I told him sometimes it feels like that. That made my day.

And when the adults say that...

well, it's going to be a long day.

I'm not from around here, I accedently got off at an exit to use a restroom. The lady took my ticket and I need a new one. I took exit 110 and I need to be in Brooklyn. How do I get another ticket without backtracking.

I'm both impressed that you found this AMA while you were on the road and a little regretful it took me over a year to answer. Regardless, I worked in Western New York so I would have been of no use to you. Hope you figured it out!
